The NFL kicked off week 2 with an AFC North barn burner Thursday night between the Cleveland Browns and Cincinnati Bengals. The best part about this game was seeing Joe Burrow bring his magic to the field! However, this game was not a preview for what the weekend would be.
Sunday was full of major injuries to key players throughout the league. Starting in the AFC, the Denver Broncos lost their starting quarterback, Drew Lock, to a sprained AC joint and he is likely to be out two to six weeks. The Broncos woes didn't stop there. A few plays later, they lost their number one wide receiver, Courtland Sutton, for the season with a torn ACL. The Los Angeles Chargers lost their starting quarterback, Tyrod Taylor, to a punctured lung by their team doctor before kickoff. Finally, the Indianapolis Colts lost their starting safety Malik Hooker to a torn Achilles tendon and wide receiver Parris Campbell to a torn MCL for the season.
The NFC arguably had the most notable injuries starting with the San Francisco 49ers losing defensive end Nick Bosa (torn ACL), defensive tackle Solomon Thomas (torn ACL), defensive end Dee Ford (back), running back Tevin Coleman (knee sprain), quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo (high-ankle sprain), and running back Raheem Mostert (MCL sprain). The team was already hurt coming into the season with injuries to Richard Sherman, George Kittle, Deebo Samuel, and Tavon Austin. On the east coast, the New York Giants and Carolina Panthers saw injuries to their start running backs. Saquon Barkley is out for the season with a torn MCL while Christian McCaffery will be sidelined for several weeks with a high-ankle sprain. Other big name players sideline for a couple weeks include Davante Adams, Julio Jones, Anthony Barr, Bruce Irvin, and Tyron Smith.
I can't stress enough the importance of preseason for the players to get into football shape.
